Build basic and advanced skills through project-based learning

Over the course of your intensive training, you’ll progress through courses that take you from the basics of planning projects and getting started to advanced skills, such as integrating apps, third-party APIs, and data security.

From the beginning of your first course, you’ll begin conceptualizing and working on your Capstone Project – an original piece of work you’ll develop either on your own or in a small team which showcases everything you’ve learned in the program.

Course Descriptions

Basic Front-End Web Development

Get started by learning how to plan a site, use templates, and manipulate layouts. Specific skills and processes covered in this course include:

  • Responsive web design with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Wireframing
  • Twitter Bootstrap

Advanced Front-End Web Development

Take your front-end skills further by learning how to integrate APIs into your sites, develop for various device displays, and personalize information and experience for different users. This portion of the program covers:

  • Document Object Model manipulations
  • jQuery
  • Ajax
  • Preprocessors
  • A/B testing
  • Interacting with external APIs
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Graphics and video handling
  • Charting data

Basic Back-End Web Development

Gain an understanding of how sites store and process data, and how to use libraries and frameworks for faster performance. This course also teaches you Python, a widely-used back end development language. Topics include:

  • Object oriented Python development
  • Data access and storage, SQL, NoSQL
  • Web frameworks
  • Ruby on Rails & PHP primers

Advanced Back-End Web Development

Integrate and extend skills from the previous three courses to develop and launch complex web applications in the cloud. This portion of the program teaches you best practices for iteration, testing, and deployment along with:

  • Cloud services
  • Agile development
  • User roles and data security

Programming Languages

This extension course reinforces programming paradigms taught during the Full Stack Web Development Certificate program, extending the educational constructs through teaching an additional coding language. Each individual coding languages’ strong data types and scoping rules require an additional level of discipline by the developer. Learning the additional language also simulates real world situations where developers are required to adapt their skills to new technologies. The course extension is heavily hands-on with many short lectures followed with practical programming exercises where the students code solutions to reinforce what they learned during the lecture. Instructors review solutions and demonstrate one or more approaches to solving the exercise.

Capstone Project

In place of a thesis or exam, there is your capstone: the focus of the portfolio you’ll build over the course of the program. What you create is up to you, and whether you work alone, in a pair, or in a small team is also your decision. What matters is that you put your skills and creativity to work demonstrating what you’ve learned over the course of the program. You will demonstrate your finished product to the community.

Development of your capstone project begins early in the program and carries on concurrently with other courses.

Interview Preparation

Job interviews for development roles often involve tough questions about how you would solve a specific programming problem or approach a project. This portion of the program gives you the opportunity to practice fielding these questions strategically—that is, showing interviewers your thought processes and problem-solving capabilities rather than memorizing a list of “correct” answers.

Case Studies

Your learning experiences during the program take you through a logical progression of skills and technologies designed to make you competent and confident with all aspects of the development process. These projects challenge you to:

  • Plan and build wireframes
  • Develop a site’s front-end using an existing back end
  • Develop a site’s back-end application after completing the front end
  • Develop the full stack from start to finish
